One morning last February, I spotted a Pied-billed Grebe swimming alone in Lake Martin. Every Pied-billed Grebe I’ve tried to photograph in the past, in this lake and elsewhere, has started moving away from me as soon as I approached it with a camera. This one was no exception, and as it drifted away it also turned away from the sun. The photo below was the only one with the grebe’s face in sufficient light for my long lens.

I’ve heard a few bird photographers describe the Pied-billed Grebe as a “very cute bird.” I concur.
