On our first morning at Indian Creek Recreational Area, I got up early and drove the east edge of the area to see if the sunrise was worth photographing. Returning to my truck when sunrise was over and morning light was abundant, I noticed a Red-winged Blackbird perched on a small tree above the water.
The bird sometimes appeared rather sleepy,
but at other times it stirred around a bit.
Of course, it would occasionally issue its loud, characteristic call.
I have trouble photographing birds that are predominantly black, but I gave it a shot because the Red-winged Blackbird is a favorite of mine. It probably goes back to my boyhood days when visiting my maternal grandparents’ farm near Elton, Louisiana. While my cousins and I explored the flooded rice fields near the farm, these birds seemed constantly to be yelling at us. Oh, to be young again!
