In May 2011 we hiked the Lost Mine Trail at Big Bend National Park. As we approached the summit of the trail, a Rufous-crowned Sparrow was seemingly welcoming us to his area. I immediately started taking photos as fast as I could, but soon realized there was no hurry. The sparrow was happy to pose for me as long as I wished.
As is the case for most mountain trails, the summit of Lost Mine Trail provides an edge to test your acrophobic tendencies. The sparrow showed us he had no such problem.
As if to drive home the point, it started doing a little dance near the edge for us.
As we started to hike on, the sparrow stood up tall and fluffed out its head feathers. This almost appeared to be an expression of anger, maybe because we never made an effort to feed it. Perhaps that was what all this was about.
The map below shows the location where the above photos were taken.
